Summer Cleaning Checklist

Summer Cleaning Checklist for Indoor and Outdoor Chores.

Indoor and Outdoor Summer Cleaning Checklist.

Summer Cleaning Checklist

Depending on your climate, summer can be your favorite season, or the most uncomfortable one to do chores in. In many parts of the country, the heat makes outdoor tasks a bit too much once the sun gets high. To make things easier and more manageable, this summer cleaning checklist is divided into indoor and outdoor jobs.

Tackle outdoor tasks early in the season while the mornings are still cool, and save the indoor chores for the hottest days when you’ll appreciate the air conditioning.

Outdoor Cleaning Tasks

The beginning of summer is the perfect time to knock out these mostly once-a-year cleaning jobs:

Clean the Windows

There’s nothing like enjoying the view through sparkling clean windows. Clean the outside glass, window screens, and shutters. Remove screens first so they can be cleaned separately. Use a broom to brush away cobwebs and dirt before spraying with water, and always be alert for bee or wasp nests near shutters and eaves.

If you live in a two-story house or have many windows, consider using a hose attachment made specifically for window washing to save time and effort.

Clean the Deck or Patio

Decks collect grime and mildew over time. Use a diluted solution of TSP or a commercial deck cleaner with a stiff-bristle push broom or brush. Scrub thoroughly, then rinse well. Avoid using a high-powered pressure washer, as it can damage wood or force water into cracks.

For patios, sweep away loose debris, and use the same method for spot cleaning or pressure washing if needed, just go easy on high settings.

Clean the Driveway

  • Asphalt: Mix 1 scoop of laundry detergent with a gallon of water.
  • Concrete: Use 1/4 cup dish soap per gallon of water.

Scrub with a stiff push broom and rinse thoroughly. For grease stains, apply kitty litter or dry cement, let it absorb the oil, then sweep it away. Commercial degreasers can help with stubborn spots. Again, skip the aggressive power washing, it can wear down surfaces over time.

Clean the Garage

Many people overlook this task in summer, but it’s an ideal time to clean and declutter the garage. Sweep out cobwebs, dust shelves, donate or toss unused items, and wipe down surfaces. If needed, install fans or open windows early in the day to stay cool.

Check and Clean Outdoor Furniture

Remove cushions and clean both the furniture and fabrics. Use mild soap and water on plastic, wicker, or metal frames, and wash cushion covers according to the tags. Let everything dry thoroughly before storing or placing it back outside.

Tune Up the Lawn Mower

At the end of summer, clean your lawn mower thoroughly and prep it for storage. Never tip the mower upside down; prop it on its side according to manufacturer instructions.

Drain any remaining fuel and oil into approved containers. Spray the undercarriage with a hose, remove built-up grass clippings, and allow it to dry fully before storage to prevent rust. Dispose of oil and gas properly at a local auto shop or recycling center.

Indoor Cleaning Tasks

These once-a-year or seasonal jobs are best saved for hot days when you’d rather be inside anyway.

Clean the Air Conditioner

Window Units: At the end of the season, unplug and remove the front panel. Vacuum the coils using a brush attachment and clean the filter thoroughly.

Central Units: Turn off power to the unit. Clear debris from the outdoor condenser, gently rinse it down with a hose, and cover it to protect it through fall and winter. Indoors, replace filters and consider a professional HVAC tune-up if you haven’t had one in over a year.

Sort and Organize the Pantry

Toss expired items and anything you’re not realistically going to use. Wipe down shelves and group like items together for easier access. Don’t forget to inspect for pantry pests like moths or beetles.

Clean and Flip Mattresses

This task is best done seasonally. Vacuum the mattress surface and box springs, flip or rotate the mattress, and vacuum the new surface. Use a hypoallergenic mattress protector and wash bedding in hot water to reduce allergens like dust mites.

Air Out and Clean Luggage

Even if you didn’t travel, luggage can develop musty odors. Wipe down the outside with mild cleanser (or leather cleaner if needed), and clean the inside with a vinegar-water solution (1:5). Air dry in a shady area, then store with a dryer sheet inside for freshness.

Flush the Water Heater

Flushing once a year removes sediment buildup, which helps your water heater run more efficiently and last longer. Always turn off the power and water before starting. If unsure, call a professional or check the manufacturer’s guide.

Vacuum Air Vents and Registers

Remove and vacuum both sides of all vent covers. Wipe down with a damp cloth to remove grime caused by dust and moisture. Consider using vent filters for improved air quality if your household has allergy sufferers.

Ceiling Fans and Light Fixtures

Summer use can quickly dirty fan blades and overhead lights. Dust them using a microfiber cloth or fan duster. For deeper cleaning, wipe blades with a damp cloth and gentle cleanser. Be sure the fan is off first!

It may look like a long list, but you can spread these jobs over a few weekends or delegate tasks to family members. Don’t forget, some of the best parts of summer are meant to be spent relaxing, so pace yourself and take breaks!

Whether you’re sprucing up your patio or making sure your home’s interior is fresh and organized, this summer cleaning checklist can help you keep everything in order and enjoy the season to its fullest.
