A Clean and Organized Bedroom

How to Organize the Bedroom

Have you ever walked into your room and wondered where the floor went? Clothes, shoes, papers, and random items can quickly turn a bedroom into chaos. While it may seem faster to toss things wherever they land, this habit creates a stressful and uninviting environment. Organizing your bedroom can transform it into a calm, functional, and relaxing space that helps you start and end your day on the right note. Even if time and motivation feel scarce, once you get started and stay focused, you’ll be surprised at how quickly organizing your bedroom comes together.

Keep These Three Things in Mind

After years of helping people professionally clean and organize bedrooms, closets, and entire homes, I’ve found that every great space shares three key qualities:
  • Functionality: Everything should have a purpose and a proper place.
  • Appearance: Keep it visually calm and tidy.
  • Serenity: Your bedroom should be your personal retreat, not another source of stress.
Think about these three goals as you plan your approach to organizing your bedroom.

Use a Hamper (and Use It Consistently)

A hamper or laundry basket is essential when organizing your bedroom. It keeps dirty clothes off the floor and helps you maintain order.

Tips for Laundry Control

  • Dirty clothes = hamper.
  • Clothes you can wear again = put away right away.
  • Don’t let your hamper overflow – laundry piles are clutter magnets.
Avoid tossing clothes on the bed “for later.” Keeping laundry in check instantly makes your space feel neater and more peaceful.

Clear the Dresser and Nightstand

Cluttered surfaces make a bedroom feel smaller and more stressful. Only keep essentials like:
  • A lamp
  • Tissues
  • A water carafe
  • The book you’re reading
  • A remote or alarm clock
Quick trick: If you’re unsure what belongs, clear everything off, place it in a small box, and store it under your bed. Over time, retrieve what you actually use. Whatever remains in the box can be donated or tossed.

Organizing Your Closets

Overstuffed closets make it difficult to put things away, and they can make mornings more stressful than they need to be.

Declutter First

  • If you haven’t worn it in a year, it’s time to let it go.
  • Donate clothes in good condition to charity.
  • Take designer items to consignment.
  • Hold a garage sale or give them to friends.
You’ll create space for the items you truly love and wear.

The “One In, One Out” Rule

My mother taught me this brilliant trick: when you buy something new, donate something old. If you buy a new sweater, one old sweater must go. This simple rule keeps clutter from creeping back into your life.

Tame the Shoe Situation

If your shoes are piled high in a corner or closet, invest in a shoe organizer. It saves space, protects your shoes, and makes mornings smoother.

Great Shoe Storage Options

  • Hanging over-the-door organizers
  • Under-bed bins
  • Cubbies or racks
  • Clear plastic boxes for off-season or special-occasion shoes
If you still don’t have enough room, it might be time to pare down your collection.

Establish a Morning (and Nighttime) Routine

A well-organized bedroom supports good habits. Planning your outfit or setting aside what you’ll need the next day makes mornings calmer.

My Personal System

  • Check the night before that everything you’ll need is clean.
  • In the morning, lay out clothes neatly on a chair.
  • Fold or hang pajamas instead of tossing them on the floor.
  • Make your bed – it instantly makes the room look cleaner.
Coming home to a tidy, well-prepared bedroom makes your evenings more relaxing and helps you unwind.

Organize Books, Movies, and Music

If you keep books, DVDs, or CDs in your bedroom, store them properly to prevent clutter and dust buildup.

Storage Ideas

  • Use shelves or small bookcases.
  • Opt for wall-mounted shelves if floor space is limited.
  • Keep less-used items in labeled bins under the bed.
Group items alphabetically, by genre, or however feels most natural to you. A little structure goes a long way.

Use Baskets for Everyday Organization

A “dump basket” is one of my favorite organizing tools. Keep one in your bedroom and use it as a catch-all for misplaced items. Two simple steps:
  1. Throughout the day, drop in anything that doesn’t belong in the bedroom.
  2. Once a day – before bed or first thing in the morning—put everything away.
After a couple of weeks, this becomes a natural habit that prevents clutter from returning.

What Works Best for You

Organizing your bedroom doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Break it into small steps, take your time, and focus on progress, not perfection.
  • Don’t try to do everything in one day.
  • Find a system that fits your lifestyle.
  • Be patient – habits take about 30 days to form.
When you maintain an organized space, your bedroom becomes more than just a place to sleep – it becomes your sanctuary. By organizing your bedroom, you’ll gain not just a cleaner space but a calmer, more balanced start and finish to every day.
