How to Repair a Chipped Glass: A Simple DIY Guide

Ever thrown away a glass because of a small chip along the rim? You’re not alone! I’ve tossed a few myself but decided to try saving my favorite stemware, especially the pieces I want to keep for holidays and special occasions. They’re not expensive, but they’re perfect for us.

Chips often occur on the rim or base of the glass. If the chip is small, you don’t have to toss it or banish it to the back of a cupboard. With a little patience and care, you can fix it yourself and restore your set!

However, for larger chips, heirloom pieces, or valuable crystal, it’s best to consult a professional glass restoration service.

Fixing Small Chips in Glassware

Ready to try repairing that chipped glass? Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide. You’ll just need a couple of common items to get started.

What You’ll Need to Fix Chipped Glass

  • Coarse grit sandpaper
  • Super fine grit sandpaper
  • (Optional) Coarse emery board and super fine nail buffer if you don’t have sandpaper
  • Jewelry polishing cream

Step 1: Start with Coarse Grit Sandpaper

Under running water, gently sand the chipped area with the coarse grit sandpaper. Be careful not to apply too much pressure, as this can crack the glass. Periodically stop and check the surface with your finger. Once the chip is mostly smoothed out, you’re ready for the next step.

Step 2: Rinse the Glass and Inspect the Chipped Area

Wash the glass and let it dry. This helps you clearly see the area you’ve sanded. If the surface feels smooth but looks dull, don’t worry—that’s where the fine sandpaper comes in.

Step 3: Smooth with Super Fine Sandpaper

Using the super fine sandpaper (again, under running water), gently polish the sanded area. This step smooths out any roughness left from the coarse grit sandpaper and restores the shape of the glass.

Step 4: Wash and Check for Dullness

Rinse and dry the glass again. If there’s any dullness or roughness left, lightly sand those areas with the fine grit paper until the glass looks even.

Step 5: Polish with Jewelry Cream

If the glass feels slightly less smooth than the rest, rub a small amount of jewelry polishing cream over the area. This will help restore the glass’s shine and smoothness.

Finally, give the glass a good hand wash, let it dry, and admire your work. Congratulations! You’ve just saved a chipped glass.

Now you can enjoy your favorite glassware without the chip or dull spot—perfect for your next special occasion.
