Grease Stain Removal
How To Remove Grease Stains
Often times, grease stain removal can be difficult. Depending on the type of grease that it is, you may be faced with a considerable amount of problems.
There are plenty of situations when grease can get onto your flooring including carpeting (someone spilled something, again) or on your clothing (another piece of chicken hit your pants.) You may also find that grease stains happen in your garage from the car. In any case, effective stain removal can happen if you know how to go about doing it.
One thing that is important to take into consideration is the fact that not all grease stains are the same. Those that are from food products, such are vegetable or other cooking oils or butter are much different than those that come from the engine of your car. Therefore, each of these may need to be treated in a different way. In either case, take a few minutes to determine the right method for removing grease stains as we have provided for you here.
Removing Stains
When a grease stain happens, quick action is the best means for getting rid of it. To do this, follow these suggested tips.
- Use clean, white paper towels to absorb as much of the stain as possible.
- Blot the paper towels to the stain for this to happen.
- Once no more grease is moving from the stain to the paper towel, you can move on.
- Use a dull knife to scrape up anything that is excessive, especially if the grease has hardened.
- Use hot water to help in loosening up the grime as it will help it to relax some.
- Use a mild detergent that is safe for the fabric or material. Rub the stain with the detergent in a circular motion.
- Allow to sit for five to ten minutes at least. Do not allow to dry.
- Rinse with hot water.
- Apply pre treatment before laundering clothing.
- Launder as needed, allow to air dry to check for stains cleanliness.
Food Grease:
Need help with grease stains from cooking oil, butter or from the BBQ that you went to? Or, perhaps you need some help with set in stains?
It never fails that something will spill onto your clothing either while you are cooking it or while you are eating it. If you need help in removing grease from clothing like this, here are some simple steps to help you.
First off, these stains can be successfully removed just by using a bit of shampoo on them. Just place a few drops onto the stain and allow it to sit for a few minutes. You can work it in with your fingers but do not rub in too much. Launder as usually. If you find that all of the stain has not come out, you can add the additional step of pre-treating the stain with laundry pre-treatment products. Make sure to let the stain air dry to determine if the stain has been fully removed.
Other Types Of Grease:
Sometimes, it is just not in the time frame that you have to go about cleaning up a grease mess like this. You just have to spend a little more time getting to the grease stain.
If you have grease stains that happen to your clothing or to other cloth products from the garage, from repairing the car or from a bicycle chain, you can successfully clean it out.
- To do this, apply Dawn dish washing detergent to the stain.
- Use a clean terry cloth to blot the stain to remove anything extra that you can.
- Then, apply a bit of Dawn directly onto the fabric.
- Work in with your fingers.
- When you launder these pieces of clothing (especially when you have a whole load of them) add 1/4 of a cup of Dawn to the wash with 1/4 of a cup of Simple Green.
- It will help to get rid of all those grease stains that get brought into your home.
Tough Stains:
One common problem happens when you just find the stain as you are doing the laundry. Your husband forgot to tell you he changed the oil in the car and got grease on your favorite shirt of his. When this happens, head out to the garage and borrow the WD-40. Spray the stain with this product and allow it to sit for a few minutes. Now, it is reactivated and you can follow the tips above to remove the stain as if it was fresh.
Removing grease does not have to be hard. With a little will power and the right tools, anyone can get the grime out successfully.
Spend some time working on those old, set in stains too. You would be surprised by how many pieces of clothing you can save this way.
