Easy Step by Step Bathroom Cleaning Tips
Bathroom Cleaning Tips
Any type of cleaning is not high on our list of favorite tasks to do and I’d bet that cleaning the bathroom ranks at the very bottom on the list of chores.
The bathroom might be out of sight but it cannot be neglected. I have put bathroom cleaning off many times and I understand exactly why we all do it. But at the same time, being more efficient when cleaning lessens the pain at actually having to get on my knees and start scrubbing away.
Follow these tips to clean your bathroom quickly and efficiently; making your bathroom shine, saving you time and then you can do something fun when the job is finished.
1. Get Your Cleaning Tools and Gather Supplies
Your tools will vary depending on the various surfaces you are cleaning and the type of floors you need to clean. Cleaning supplies might include a bucket or cup, scrub brush, an old toothbrush, sponges, disinfectant, mold and mildew remover, gloves and rags, etc.
- Broom / Dustpan
- Vacuum Cleaner
- Mop / Mop Bucket
- Floor Cleaner
- Disinfectant
- Toilet Bowl Cleaner
- Soft Scrub
- Glass Cleaner
- Bleach
- All-Purpose Cleaner
- Plain White Vinegar
- Bathroom Cleaner or Wipes
- Sponges, Paper Towels, Cleaning Cloths
- Soft Bristle Brush
- Green Scrubby
- Gloves
2. Pick Up Rugs and Debris From the Floor
- Remove all rugs from the floor and set them aside to then be shaken, washed or vacuumed.
- Vacuum the floor to remove hair, paper and other debris.
3. Spray the Tub, Shower and Toilet
The time it will take to completely disinfect the tub, shower and toilet will vary based on the cleaner that you have used, the strength, and the surface it has been applied too.
- Spray the bathtub and shower first with your cleaning solution or mold and mildew remover and let it sit.
- Move to the toilet to spray or sprinkle your cleaner inside the bowl and let it sit. If extra cleaning power is needed, you can instead use some white vinegar and let this sit for a bit.
4. Spray and Clean the Sink and Mirror
Water faucets and sink areas can have hard white spots called hard water deposits. The white-hazy stain can be difficult to remove and shows up most often around the tap opening. Cleaning is possible with vinegar or rust removal preparations.
- Take all items off the counter wipe them down and set them aside.
- Spray the sink and countertop with a disinfectant spray or all-purpose cleaner that is appropriate for the surfaces.
- Use a soft bristled toothbrush to clean any mildew or mold from around the drain and other small areas of the sink.
- Clean the sink bowl, faucets and countertops and rinse when finished then dry with a clean rag.
- Spray down the mirror especially where there are water spots, makeup smudges or toothpaste as these can be hard to remove.
- After cleaning the mirror be sure to go over it with a dry clean soft cloth to avoid streaks.
- Replace your toiletries and other items back on the countertop.
If you have a mirror with a frame around it, it is best to spray the cleaning cloth first then clean the mirror. This way you will not (overtime) damage the frame, backing and any glue holding the mirror in the frame.
5. Scrub the Bathtub and Shower
Bathroom tiles are usually glazed ceramic tiles and can have an accumulated buildup of body oil and soap scum. Soap scum from bar soap will also cause a major problem in bathrooms. Eliminate soap scum by switching to liquid soap.
White vinegar may help remove hard water stains from faucets and the drain area if it has not already done significant damage.
- The bathtub and shower can be cleaned with a scrub brush, green scrubbie or whatever you have that is appropriate for the surface material.
- You can also use a toothbrush to clean around the drain, faucet and other tight places.
- Rinse and dry fixtures, tub and tiles when finished cleaning for a nice shine.
6. Cleaning a Glass Shower Door
If you have glass in the shower and are finding it difficult to stop soap scum from clouding the glass, try scrubbing with a dryer sheet. It takes a bit of elbow grease, but works well to give you a streak free shine.
7. Cleaning the Toilet
- Time to go back and clean and scrub the toilet. With your scrub brush or scrubbie, clean the inside of the bowl and don’t forget under the rim.
- Wipe down the top, front, sides, seat and along the bottom of the toilet.
- Flush the toilet and your almost done!
If there is any heavy staining on the porcelain, clean with a paste made of borax and water. If heavy staining is in the toilet bowl you can also use a pumice stone to scrub the stains away (follow instructions).
8. Finish With the Floors
The rugs have already been removed, shaken and cleaned and you’ve already vacuumed up any debris. Use a cleaning solution that is recommended by the manufacturer for your type of flooring. Dry and replace floor mats.
9. Your Reward
After spending a satisfying amount of time cleaning your bathroom you can reward yourself. Relax a bit and admire the work you have done. Your bathroom should look and smell clean.
Have a favorite drink or snack, it doesn’t even have to be sugar free. The calories that you have burned will make up the difference, and of course you deserve it after a job well done!
