Cleaning Steps:

Clean up Blood Stains as Soon as Possible

Get to work on the stain as soon as you see it. The longer the blood has been allowed to sit, the harder it will be to remove the blood from the carpet.

Use Cold Water only to Clean

With most stains, you would use hot or warm water to clean it up. However, this does not apply to blood stains- whether fresh, dried, old, new or of pet or human variety. Heat literally cooks the blood. When it cooks, the blood stain is permanently set. Even warm water will set blood stains, so if you do nothing else, you must clean it with cold water to have any chance at removing the blood.

Blot – Don’t Scrub the Carpet

One of the biggest (and most common) mistakes when it comes to removing blood from a carpet is scrubbing. If you try to scrub bloodstains from a carpet, you are just going to end up spreading the stain. Carpet fibers fray when scrubbed and that’s not going to look good at all when the stain is gone either.

Instead, just press a clean dry towel against the stain to blot.

Cleaning Solutions to Remove Blood:

Most of the time, you don’t need any fancy cleanser to remove blood from a carpet. There are many common products that you probably already have at home, which should work well.

Plain Cold Water

This is one of the most effective methods used to remove blood from a carpet. Just pour the cold water over the stain, blot with a clean dry towel to remove as much of the water as possible.

Continue applying water and blotting until the blood stain has been removed.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is a great solution for removing blood for carpets. After you have removed as much blood as possible using the cold water method, pour a little 3% household strength hydrogen peroxide straight on the stain.

It will react to the blood immediately and start foaming like crazy. Get your towel and blot up all the foaming material as soon as you can.

Repeat this as necessary, you don’t need to rinse the hydrogen peroxide from the carpet as it converts to water when exposed to sunlight.

Foaming Shaving Cream

This is great for carpet bloodstains that haven’t had time to set. Just foam some shaving cream onto the blood and let it sit for a few minutes. Then, blot out the shaving cream.

Tough or Set in Blood Stains:

Oh no, something’s not working. It’s very likely that the stain has set. Here’s a few more things to try.

Meat Tenderizer & Salt

Mix up a paste of water and equal parts meat tenderizer and salt. Spread the paste on the stain and let it sit overnight.

The meat tenderizer and the salt work to tear down the proteins in the blood. The next day vacuum up or remove as much paste as you can, then blot with clean cold water and a towel to remove the remaining paste.

Commercial Products

If all that seems like too much, and you want to get a commercial blood stain remover, I recommend blood buster set in stain remover. It does a great job removing blood stains, and this might be your best bet.
