Quit procrastinating and let’s get started.

Organizing Home Closets

Preparation

You are the best one to know what’s in your closets and where they are located. You need to decide exactly what you would like each closet to be used for. At the end of the day, you do not want to see your good china in the closet out in the garage or your kid’s toys in the kitchen closet.

Designate each closet for a main purpose and if you must, label the door. For instance, the closet next to the front door is for overcoats, boots, hats and umbrellas.

You will need hangers, plastic boxes with lids, big and small, tie racks, hooks, baskets for putting like items, shoe racks or boxes, and keep a hammer and nails close at hand.

Those 1ftx1ft square crates come in handy for just about everything you can think of. If you want to add shelving, that is your choice, just remember to measure carefully to avoid unnecessary mistakes. Always paint shelves and let them dry thoroughly before installing

How To Start

Designate 4 stacks at each closet

  • Trash
  • 2 year rule
  • Wash
  • Belongs somewhere else

The first time you organize, you’re going to find quite a few misplaced items, but don’t get discouraged.

If you keep your closets organized, next year when you do this again, it will be much easier. Begin with a familiar closet, like your clothes closet or the kitchen closet. You have a pretty good idea what you’ll find and what you want to keep there.

4 Easy Steps To Organize Your Closet

  1. Start at the top, taking everything down, and noting if you have used it in the past 2 years. That’s the rule. If you haven’t – it goes in the give away or the trash pile. Then wipe the shelf clean. Use plastic boxes for like items, make a label to identify contents.
  2. Do not hang onto useless stuff unless it’s memorabilia, and then start a container for that and decide if it goes to another closet. Try to keep like items with like items. A box of boxes is generally not something you need causing clutter in a closet. If you need a box, we all know where to find them.
  3. Sort and separate the entire closet. If you find many items floating around, like ties or cooking pans or utensils, use one of the racks or hooks attached carefully to the door or wall to solve the problem. When you find kids’ or miscellaneous stuff – put it in the crates and you can sit down and go through the crates while watching TV tonight.
Now as you’ve been cleaning the shelf, putting all like items together, return them in an orderly fashion.
  4. Look through the clothes and hang the shirts with shirts, and so on. Everything gets its own hanger, no sharing. Now disregarding the four piles on the floor – stand back and take a Look. Without that clutter it looks 100 percent better, clothes are organized and now you can actually find something.

Move on to the next closet. Start four more piles and after you organize this second closet – combine the piles, take out the trash, put things away and clean up some. Then move onto the next.

You can finish your whole house in this systematic organized manner in just one day. Take the time to organize your closets and your home and eliminate that clutter. You will save time and energy in your everyday life and things will be so much handier for you.
